Richard J. Sperry, M.D., Ph.D., directs the University of Utah's Governor Scott M. Matheson Center for Health Care Studies. He is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, and attended the University of Utah: BA (Economics); BA (Chemistry); MD; MS (Economics); PhD (Administration of Higher Education). He served as a resident physician and clinical fellow at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. After his residency he returned to the University of Utah in 1987. His clinical specialty is anesthesiology for neurosurgical procedures. He has over 100 professional publications including two textbooks relating to neuroanesthesia.
In 1995 he was awarded a fellowship with the Washington, D.C. based American Council on Education. In addition to his academic appointments he currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Health Sciences (Academic Affairs), and Associate Dean, School of Medicine (Faculty Affairs).
Dr. Sperry has been active in health care economics and policy for many years. He has served as the President of the Utah Medical Association and is currently a member of the Utah Physician's Licensing Board. He has written and spoken extensively on medical economic and policy issues. His particular interests are in the areas of health care costs, health care financing, cost-effectiveness analysis, clinical effectiveness and quality improvement, and professional ethics.
